Common questions

Avee scores each segment of your walking route in Rio de Janeiro on three things: how well lit the street is, how many places are open nearby at the hour you are walking, and what the crime data says. Then it shows you the route that comes out best. It shows you the numbers; it does not promise an outcome.

We use a proprietary algorithm that combines factors such as street lighting, business density, crime data, and time-of-day adjustments to generate a safety score for each area. The model has been tested extensively and continues to improve over time as we gather feedback and real-world usage data from our beta users.

Street lighting and business locations are sourced from OpenStreetMap. Crime statistics are published by the Instituto de Segurança Pública do Rio de Janeiro (ISP-RJ). Shootout and armed-conflict incidents come from Fogo Cruzado, a civil-society monitoring platform. All sources are publicly available.

Quite a lot, and we would rather say so. Street-lighting data is complete in some streets and missing in others. Only a minority of venues publish opening hours, so we fill the gaps with typical hours for that kind of place. Crime statistics are published per police precinct, not per street. And no dataset sees what is happening on a street right now. When a score rests on partial data, the app tells you which signals it is based on.

Currently Rio de Janeiro only. We are focused on delivering accurate, data-backed coverage for Rio before expanding to other cities.

Partly. Open businesses are checked for the hour you are walking, and recent incidents are updated daily. Crime statistics are published monthly. So the score reflects recent patterns, not live events. For real-time emergency alerts, follow local civil-defence or public-safety channels.

Scores are statistical estimates based on past data within a 174-metre area. They are one signal among many — not a guarantee of safety. What you see on the street, and your own judgement, always come first.

Your GPS coordinates are sent to the Avee backend only to retrieve safety scores for your route. They are not shared with third-party advertisers.
